As I write this… I am on my way to swim, bike, and run my little heart out in a little town called Santa Rosa (🍷)!! Yup, I decided to go for it.
As a dear friend told me, there will always be risks during racing… You will come out having a great race, an ok race, or just a plain shitty race. Even if you are at 100%, “stuff” can happen. In everything you do, there is the unexpected. While I don’t consider myself close to 100% (let’s be honest, who ever is?!!) I do consider myself healthy enough to swim, to bike, and start the run. I mean… If I ran three miles yesterday I can certainly make it 13.1 at race pace right?! 😜 yes, that’s how our minds work. That’s how they have to work!! Plus, the doc did approve me to give it a shot… Even if it means a nice long stretch in T2 to loosen up the calf or a very easy run. I can handle that. As long as I know – truly know – how much is enough, I’ll be good. As the Ironman slogan goes, anything can happen! 👍 And I know what I want my anything to be!!
Although not what I wanted.. I still have an opportunity to get something out of it (I might eat all these words tomorrow!!)
Honestly though, Vineman means a lot to more than just a race. It is the only 70.3 race I have done repeatedly… Year after year… It’s the place I finished my first Ironman a mere 13 years ago…. It’s a place I remember my husband running half the run course next to me (because that is what you used to be allowed to do, wow I am ancient!)… It’s the first race I did since my fathers passing (weak is an understatement!) while raising money for Cancer…. It’s the place I qualified for Worlds last year and celebrated with my AirBnb host and dear friend Cortney (ahhhh wine….)…. And it’s one of my absolutely favorite places in California to visit – race or no race, Santa Rosa is pretty amazing.
So, I’m packing up my Betty bag and going for it.
See ya out there.
