Road to Worlds
Posted Oct 23, 2011
One of my 2011 goals was to qualify for the USAT Long Course World Championships. I qualified May 1st at the Wildflower Half Ironman Triathlon, placing 4th in my age group. I remember thinking “I just want to qualify, that’s it. Qualify”. I wanted to earn that spot, but my mind didn’t get around the actual idea of what the next few months would entail. 1st, Worlds is a longer distance (by about 1/3). 2nd, it is in November (about 2 months past my normal “season”). And 3rd, the field is incredibly competitive. What did I get myself into?!!
Game on! My mind frame changed. I decided I don’t just want to “be there”. I want to compete. Chance of a lifetime!!! I took a month off (some would laugh at what I consider “off”), got the mind ready, rested the body, and August I was ready to step it up.
ITU WORLD LONG COURSE CHAMPIONSHIP Race Report

I have been reluctant to write this because 1) it’s difficult to get the full experience out in writing and 2) I am trying to get to a point where my bitterness has subsided. Like anything in life, it’s tough to put so much into something and not get the desired result. Writing this might be as painful for me as it is for you trying to just get through it (don’t worry, I have sub headings so you can skip to the end). We learn a lot from racing and generally this knowledge makes us better athletes. This race, and preparing for it, has made me a better athlete.
